It explains why a unit of Libyan Peltasts (barefoot peasants with javelins) can survive being boxed in 360 by 3x centuries of crack Evocati. If you want a tougher campaign with more AI aggression and armies but not the in battle buffs make sure you go to options and tone battle difficulty down to normal.Īh I see now I have battle difficulty on very hard it seems which matches the campaign difficulty I selected. Also in battle the AI will get some buffs to morale and possibly other stats so you may find unit matchups you expect to go your way end up going belly up. Topic: I'd give hard a go if you like remember that it changes things you may not expect like I think there is a -10 party loyalty penalty applied across the board which is quite significant. Once you begin a campaign you can go to options and change the battle difficulty from the setting you chose at the start allowing you to have a 'very hard' campaign and 'normal battles' I get quite confused why the whole " / " remains. But in Rome 2 they're combined into a single difficulty. I see 'Difficulty / Difficulty' mentioned a lot on the Rome 2 forum and it made sense in the Rome 1 days because you had Game Difficulty and Battle Difficulty. If you just want more challenge then go ahead and jack up the difficulty but can be rather immersion breaking if that matters to you. For more help on that side of the game you can also find a couple of guides I co-wrote with Alwyn over on Total War Center here and here. In both cases politics are a bit easier than Rome as you don't start as a republic, so don't have that loyalty penalty. You start at war with the Seleucids, but they have problems of their own which usually keep them busy. Their roster is also decent without too much in the way of gimmicks or units needing special strategies, except for chariots, which can be a bit finnicky but also fun.Įgypt are a solid faction with a decent sized unit roster, easy access to food (which makes it easier to build and upgrade buildings,) a central location with different ways you can choose to expand, and their nearest opponents aren't too difficult. Once you have the isles secured, you have a solid base to then expand into Gaul and beyond. Iceni start in a corner of the map and you can essentially play a short campaign with them just conquering the British Isles. The other two factions I tend to suggest for new players are the Iceni and Egypt. Think we missed one? Give us a Modmail and suggest new Subreddits to add to the lists!
